Vyshyvanka Day is a Ukrainian holiday celebrated on the third Thursday of May. It is dedicated to the Ukrainian national attire – the vyshyvanka, which is a symbol of culture, traditions, and national identity. This day is not related to religious or state events but has a cultural and patriotic character.

History of the holiday
The holiday was initiated in 2006 by students of the Yuriy Fedkovych National University of Chernivtsi.
The idea arose among the students, who decided to wear vyshyvankas en masse on one day to highlight their identity.
Since then, the holiday has gained international recognition: it is celebrated not only in Ukraine but also in the Ukrainian diaspora around the world.

Purpose of the holiday
Promoting Ukrainian culture and traditions.
Supporting national unity and pride in one's identity.
Drawing attention to traditional Ukrainian clothing as part of the world cultural heritage.

Symbolism of the vyshyvanka
Each vyshyvanka is unique, as the patterns and ornaments carry specific meanings:
Geometric patterns – symbolize harmony and infinity.
Plant motifs – represent life, nature, and prosperity.
Animal motifs – often associated with beliefs and protection from evil.
Moreover, each region of Ukraine has its own distinctive characteristics in embroidery.

International recognition
Today, Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated in more than 50 countries worldwide. Ukrainians and their friends wear vyshyvankas, organize marches, and hold cultural events to showcase the beauty and significance of traditional Ukrainian clothing.
